The TV meteorologists call it the start of summer, but Memorial Day is so much more. Our lives and our liberty are owed to those brave men and women who left their families and put themselves in harm’s way for our freedom. And whether they lost their lives on the field of battle, or returned to their loved ones from the front, our service members truly deserve a moment of our time and our thanks this weekend.
During my tenure, I have had the honor and responsibility to safeguard the Garden of Heroes, a tribute to those Rhode Islanders who gave the ultimate sacrifice defending our country from terrorism. Today, I was joined by Maj. Gen. Robert Bray, the state’s Adjutant General, to lay a wreath at the monument – a simple way to say thank you and that I will never forget what they gave for our freedom.
Enjoy this weekend. Visit our wonderful local businesses (and bring your out of town guests!!). Most of all, take a moment to reflect and to remember those who have gone before, and those who are serving now across the globe, to fight for freedom, to preserve our liberty and to give us such an amazing country to call home.
