In this week when we remember the service and sacrifice of our country’s veterans, we have an opportunity to show our gratitude to those from Rhode Island currently serving overseas in the form of Operation Holiday Cheer. The annual program sends care packages to troops from our state serving in other countries during the holidays.
This Saturday, November 14, is donation drop-off, and we’ll have volunteers there from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the North Main Street Armory (1051 N. Main St.) to take and sort your donations.
Items with a uniquely Rhode Island flavor are always big hits with the troops, such as Del’s Lemonade mix, or coffee syrup to make our famous coffee milk.
Other requested donations are: ground coffee, beef jerky, packaged cookies, trail mix, nuts, hard candy, chewing gum, shaving cream (no aerosol), dental hygiene products, foot powder, sunscreen, deodorant, hand sanitizer, moist towelettes, DVDs, music CDs, books (no religious content), AA and AAA batteries, games and playing cards, baseballs, softballs and gloves, white socks (no logo). It’s important to stick to the list; chocolates and homemade goodies, for example, cannot be shipped.
I’d like to thank our sponsors for their generous support of the program, including AAA of Southern New England, the American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter, American Speedy Printing, Amica Insurance, Autocrat Coffee, Bank of America, Banneker Industries, the Boston Celtics, CVS Caremark, Dunkin' Donuts, Hasbro, Home Depot, the New England Patriots, National Grid, Ocean State Job Lot, the Providence Journal and the United States Postal Service.
